At halfway point, Eagles look to build on strong points
RALEIGH, N.C. — Wake Tech women's basketball is almost to the halfway point of their regular season, having played 13 of their 28 schedules games. While the win-loss record is not where they want it to this point, there are several reasons to be optimistic about the direction the team is headed in.
Freshman guard Iveonna Ward leads the team in scoring (15.7), and ranks sixth amongst Region 10 DII players. The Elizabethtown native has been an important addition to the Eagles' backcourt, showing the ability to take over any game offensively.
The team can also lean on experience, with redshirt-sophomore Destiny Mason playing a big role in her third season with the program. Mason has appeared in all 13 games, making 11 starts, and is second on the team in scoring (11.7). She is also making an impact in rebounding (4.8 per game), assists (3.0 per game), and steals (1.2 per game).
Unique Cooke ranks fifth in Region 10 in blocks per game (1.3). Sophomore center Ashrya Carroll is right behind Cooke with 1.2 per game. As a team, the Eagles are third in Region 10 in blocks (4.1 per game), and will look to continue using their length to disrupt opponents' shooting throughout the rest of the season.
The Eagles head to Wilmington on Monday, January 12 for their second game against Cape Fear. After a narrow defeat at home in November, Monday's contest provides an opportunity for the team to showcase their growth since then. Their next home game isn't until Monday, January 19, when they'll take on Louisburg for a Martin Luther King Day matinee.
Two other notable home dates remaining on the schedule are the annual Play4Kay game on Sunday, February 8 against Southwest Virginia, and Sophomore Day on Saturday, February 28 against Guilford Tech.
