Daniel Colvin named head women's basketball coach
RALEIGH, N.C. — Wake Tech Community College Athletics announced today the hiring of Daniel Colvin as the program's new head women's basketball coach. Colvin brings more than three decades of coaching and educational leadership experience to the Eagles women's basketball program, highlighted by a 21-year tenure as an NCAA Division II assistant at Barton College and recognition as one of North Carolina's most accomplished school principals.
"My goal was to find a head women's basketball coach who is a proven leader, experienced in intercollegiate coaching and recruiting, and guided by a strong moral compass," Athletic Director Robin Pate said. "Daniel Colvin is that coach. As a lifelong educator, he brings a deep passion to compete and win, and I'm excited for the future of our program."
Colvin served as an assistant coach for 21 seasons (2003–24) with the Barton College women's basketball program, contributing to 10 NCAA Division II Tournament appearances, eight regular-season championships, and three conference tournament titles.
Prior to his time on the Barton coaching staff, he served as associate head coach of the men's program at Craven Community College (1999–2001).
"I want to thank Athletic Director Robin Pate and the entire Athletics team for believing in my leadership and entrusting me with the opportunity to take the Wake Tech Women's Basketball program to the next level," Colvin said. "I'm also grateful to President Dr. Scott Ralls, Vice President Brian Gann, Associate Vice President Kevin Brown, and Dean Brian Anweiler for their support in what is truly an extraordinary opportunity. Wake Tech is the flagship community college in North Carolina and is recognized nationally for excellence. Along with my coaching staff, our goal is to build on that reputation by developing a program of student‑athletes who compete with excellence, integrity, and pride—both on the court and in the classroom."
A former four-year starter and three-year captain for the men's basketball program, Colvin was inducted into the Barton College Athletic Hall of Fame in February 2026. His playing and coaching career is complemented by a robust academic background that includes a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Barton College, a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Arkansas State University, and ongoing doctoral studies in Educational Leadership at Carson–Newman University (expected May 2027).
Beyond the hardwood, Colvin is a retired public-school educator with 31 years of service and a distinguished record as a principal in North Carolina. He served as principal at Craven Early College High School, Mary E. Phillips High School, and Rocky Mount High School, earning Nash County High School Principal of the Year and Nash County District Principal of the Year honors in 2021–22. He also participated in Harvard University's Education Innovation Laboratory and co-chaired the Wake County Superintendent's Strategic Planning Committee.
Colvin will begin work immediately in preparation for the 2026-27 season.
