MILLBROOK, Ala. — A valiant second-half effort wasn't enough for the Wake Tech women's soccer team, as their season came to an end with a 2-1 loss against Southern Union in the NJCAA South District semifinal on Friday afternoon. Despite a determined comeback that kept them in the match until the final whistle, the Eagles fell just short of securing a spot in Saturday's championship game.
The first half was tight, with Southern Union maintaining a majority of the possession, but the Eagles defense remained composed, as has been the case the whole season. Southern Union grabbed the lead just before halftime, needing an inch-perfect cross to get over the fingertips of Wake Tech keeper Katelynn Angel, who finished with eigh saves, before being headed in at the back post.
The Bison doubled their lead in the 72nd minute, but the game was far from over. Averi Richmond brought the Eagles within one in the 88th minute, on a corner kick taken by Jocelyn Tavira-Gallardo.
The last few minutes were a mad dash, with Wake Tech nearly scoring the equalizer after a misplaced pass from the Southern Union goalkeeper, but ultimately they hold on for the 2-1 victory.
The loss brings the season to a close, but reaching an NJCAA District tournament is the furthest the program has advanced.
