HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — Wake Tech baseball split Saturday's doubleheader against WVU Potomac State.
Despite struggling in game one, the Eagles put together a much stronger performance in game two, walking it off in the seventh inning to secure a 5-4 victory. The Eagles wasted no time, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Jackson Jones scored on an error by Potomac State's second baseman, and Nick Schultz drove in two more with a double. Wake Tech added one more run in the second on an RBI-groundout from Blake Russell, scoring Jones for a second time.
Ayden Sumner got the start and worked four innings, giving up three runs and striking out four. Chance Turner threw one inning in relief, before head coach DJ Russ turned to Aidan Warnock for the final two innings. Warnock kept the Catamounts off the board and struck out three, earning his second win of the season.
The Catamounts tied it in the top of the fifth, setting up a showdown in the final innings. With the game tied, Russell led off the bottom of the seventh with a double. Blake Gaffney grounded out to move him over to third, and then a hard grounder from Schultz ricocheted off of the Potomac State third baseman's glove and into right field, scoring Russell and ending the game.
Schultz finished with four RBI across both games.
The Eagles are now 7-11 on the season. Sunday's series finale has been moved up one hour, with first pitch scheduled for 11:00 A.M.
