Mayes walk off completes sweep over Guilford Tech
HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — Wake Tech baseball completed their first sweep in conference play, coming from behind to beat Guilford Tech 10-9 in walk off fashion on Sunday afternoon.
The Eagles trailed 9-1 at one point, but continued to put together competitive at bats and hold the Titans to nine.
Blake Russell doubled home home Jackson Jones in the third for the Eagles' first run.
Nick Schultz scored on a wild pitch to start the comeback in the bottom of the fourth. The Eagles stranded two runners in scoring position that inning, but continued to mount pressure on the Guilford Tech bullpen.
In the bottom of the sixth, head coach DJ Russ turned to his bench and called on Jake Mathis to pinch hit. Mathis made the most of his opportunity, hitting a three-run homer off of the light pole in left-center field, a blast that traveled 402 feet. The Eagles now trailed by only three runs.
The Eagles continued to chip away in the seventh, with Matthew Phuntek, also off the bench, driving in one more on a sac fly to make it 9-7.
It all came together in the ninth inning, when the Eagles scored four to complete the comeback and the sweep. Back-to-back errors from the Titans brought home a pair of runs. Then, another pinch hitter, Colton Mayes, came up with runners on the corners and one out, with the Eagles trailing by a run. Mayes hit a liner to right-center field, scoring both runners and winning the game in walk off fashion.
Three hitters came off the bench throughout the game and tallied seven RBI.
Chance Turner and Aidan Warnock combined for five shutout innings to hold the Titans at nine runs. Turner came in to pitch the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, allowing just three hits and striking out two. Warnock allowed no hits, walked one, and struck out one.
The Eagles travel to Virginia on Tuesday for a midweek match up with the Richard Bland Statesmen. In the first matchup between these two teams, Wake Tech staged a late comeback attempt but ultimately fell short 12-10.
